Dr. Chalef can whiten teeth dramatically using various forms of hydrogen peroxide. One form, carbamide peroxide, used in the form of a gel, is placed into special trays that are custom-fitted to your teeth. The tray is worn in the mouth for one to eight hours per treatment. When in contact with the teeth, the carbamide peroxide releases oxygen that releases the stain on your teeth. This process is safe and effective.  In some cases, bleaching may cause temporary sensitivity that typically disappears within a few days.  Results usually last several years, and touch up treatments can be done when some discoloration reoccurs. From adolescence on, anyone can be a candidate for bleaching of the teeth.

Bleaching Homecare Instructions:

1. Start with your custom made trays.  Place a small amount of bleaching gel inside the trays (on the surface corresponding to the front of the tooth), and seat trays in your mouth.  If the gel oozes out onto the gum tissue, take a Q-tip or a toothbrush to wipe away excess.

2. Trays can be worn 4+ hours or overnight.  When trays are taken out, rinse under cold water and use a toothbrush to remove the residual bleaching gel left inside the tray.  Trays can be stored in the provided case.  You want to begin each bleaching treatment with clean, dry trays.

3. If sensitivity occurs during the bleaching process, we recommend using a desensitizing toothpaste, like sensodyne.  This can be used in place of your regular toothpaste while you are bleaching, and for a few days after treatment is finished.  If sensitivity is still an issue, the bleaching treatment can be done every other day instead of everyday, but bleaching results may take longer.

4. While bleaching, try to refain from consuming dark, staining foods and liquids, like soft drinks, berries, coffee, tea and wine.

5. Initial bleaching treatments usually take 1-2 weeks depending on how white you want your teeth to be and how fast your teeth respond.  Continue with daily bleaching treatments until you have reached your desired bleaching shade.  If you have any remaining tubes of bleaching gel, they can be stored in the provided pouch in a cool, dry place to save for a future bleaching touch up when needed.  We usually recommend touching up after routine cleanings, when the teeth are most receptive to the bleach.  Additional bleaching touch up kits can be purchased through our office.

Bleaching Instructions for at home tray system:

After picking up whitening kit and verifying fit
of trays in office, place a dab of bleaching gel
on the inside of the tray (surface corresponding
to front of tooth) and place in your mouth after
thoroughly brushing and flossing.  Try not to get
too much on the gum tissue, and wipe off excess
with a q-tip or toothbrush.  Do not eat or drink with
the trays in place.  Wearing the trays for at least
4 hours or even better overnight seems to provide
the best results.  An initial bleaching treatment
usually takes 1-2 weeks.
